Celsius Medical CALIMA is a medical device used for the treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It is a small, implantable device that stimulates the hypoglossal nerve to keep the airway open during sleep. The device consists of three components: a small battery-powered stimulator, a sensing lead that detects breathing patterns, and a stimulation lead that delivers electrical pulses to the hypoglossal nerve.
During sleep, the device senses the patient’s breathing patterns and delivers electrical pulses to the hypoglossal nerve, which controls the muscles of the tongue and other soft tissues in the throat. The stimulation causes these muscles to contract and keep the airway open, preventing episodes of obstructive sleep apnea.
The Celsius Medical CALIMA device is implanted under the skin in the upper chest area during a minimally invasive procedure. The device is controlled by a small handheld programmer that can adjust the stimulation settings based on the patient’s individual needs.
The Celsius Medical CALIMA device is intended for use in patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who are unable to tolerate or benefit from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Clinical studies have shown that the device can significantly reduce the number of apnea and hypopnea events per hour and improve the quality of sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
